Cover Letter

Speculative vs Standard Letter

  • Speculative
    • something that covers the CV
    • used for an opening or position that you don't know exists - e.g., something you haven't seen advertised
  • Standard
    • something that covers the CV
    • used for an opening or position that you have seen advertised
In some cases, an email can be a cover letter, in which case the CV can be attached to the email. Each cover letter should be targeted and tailored to the organisation and role.

You should:
  • explain why you are writing and what you can offer
  • explain interest in employer
  • display understanding of job and enthusiasm
  • emphasize your key selling points
  • illustrate with examples, then direct them to your CV
  • keep the length to one side of A4 maximum
